iStock_000004032246_ExtraSmallEvery 3 months or 3,000 miles has been the standing rule of thumb for oil changes almost for as long as anyone can remember. Most modern cars can now go 4,000 or 5,000 miles before needing their next oil change. All in all, your owner’s manual is the best place to check for recommended service intervals. Although, you should keep in mind that your manufacturer’s idea of ideal driving conditions may differ from your own. For example, stop and go traffic on your daily commute is most likely considered severe driving conditions by your owner’s manual.

Why do I need to get my oil changed?

Your motor oil helps protect and lubricate the moving components in your engine. This reduces friction and heat which can be your engine’s worst nightmare. There are also outside contaminants such as dust particles and metal particulates that work their way into your engine compartment. Your motor oil circulates the debris and eventually deposits it in your oil filter.

Once the oil filter becomes saturated it will need to be replaced because it can no longer properly filter out the harmful contaminants in your engine. A good practice is to check your motor oil dipstick when you are at the pump (feel free to ask us how to properly check your oil level). Then you should look at the consistency of your oil. If it appears gritty, foamy, or is a different color other than brown. These can all be symptoms of a larger issue and should be inspected by a professional technician sooner rather than later.

If you have any questions about the condition of your oil or you think it’s time for your next oil change, drive on in, give us a call, or conveniently schedule an appointment online. Located at 15123 Frederick Rd Rockville, MD 20850
